Why online dating helps
Online, you can get to know someone before anyone else knows anything about it.
You decide who to talk to, when to meet and when to tell people, instead of the whole village finding out at once.
Keeping things private
- Think about your photos. Avoid pictures that show your house, your car's number plate or landmarks that give away exactly where you live.
- Keep your profile general. Your county or nearest town is enough. There's no need to name your village.
- Meet a little further away. A pub or café in the next town gives you more privacy on a first date.
If you recognise someone
It happens, especially in smaller places.
Be discreet. Don't mention it to others, and only approach someone you recognise in public if they've said that's OK. It's part of our community rules, and it works both ways.
When to tell people
There's no rush. Many people wait until they've met a few times and know it's going somewhere. When you're ready, you'll know.
Your safety still comes first. Even if you're keeping things quiet, always tell one trusted friend where you're going on a date. For more, read how to spot a fake dating profile.
